Safe Driving Trips - Driving Through Slush

!±8± Safe Driving Trips - Driving Through Slush

During the rainy, snowy, wet months of winter, driving conditions are significantly worse than any other time of the year. Accident statistics all over the country go up, as ice, snow, and sleet on the road surface make it slippery and more difficult for cars to grip onto. Slush, in particular, can cause serious problem. Slush is snow that mixes with water to cause slick driving conditions on the road. While it can make the road a significantly more dangerous place, following a few simple safety tips can help you arrive safely at your destination, no matter what the weather.

Safe Driving Tips

When driving through slush (or any other form of precipitation on the road surface), keep your wits about you and follow a few simple tips:

Slow down. Many tragic accidents which occur during the winter months are due simply because people are taking curves too fast and trying to accelerate too quickly. Do everything you'd do on a dry pavement a bit slower - accelerating, turning, stopping. Keep your hands on the wheel at all times. While many of us like to drive a little more casually, with one hand on the wheel, driving on slick surfaces requires your full attention and care. Make sure you scrape your windshields before driving. This is true of all winter driving; an obscured view of the road makes it more difficult to react to conditions. Prepare an accident kit and keep it in your car at all times. An accident kit should include a road cone, flares, a flash light, and a basic tool kit. Make sure you also have a space blanket for the cold winter weather. Buy the appropriate snow tires, or at the very least, use snow chains. While they can be expensive, snow tires can greatly increase your car's ability to adhere to the road surface, making you less likely to be injured or worse in a car accident. Snow tires are a less expensive, but slightly less effective, alternative. Have your brakes checked before the winter season begins in earnest. When you have to stop on a slippery surface, you need to be certain that your brakes are in perfect working order. A properly maintained brake system can be the difference between life and death. Pontoon Boat Accessories - Winterizing Your Boat

!±8± Pontoon Boat Accessories - Winterizing Your Boat

In this Pontoon Boat Accessories article we will be focusing on the importance of winterizing your boat and the 5 general areas involved in this process.  Winterizing is the equivalent of spring cleaning for your home, yet it is done 6 months earlier and also involves some very essential preventive maintenance to protect from the cold weather and an extended period of inactivity.  The five areas are as follows:
Cleaning Engine and Lower Unit Fresh and Waste Water Cabin and Interior Inspection and Covering

Cleaning is done from the inside out, from the head to the topside, from the cabin to the hull.  The better you clean and polish the better protected your boat will be and the less you have to do to launch come Spring.

The engine and lower unit prep are the most important part of the winterizing process and involve steps done in this particular order:
Top off your fuel, add a fuel stabilizer and replace your fuel filter and water separator Winterize the block with antifreeze (anti-toxic, sometimes called marine antifreeze) Fog the combustion chamber Change the oil Change the lower unit fluid Conduct a visual inspection of the entire power train

The freshwater and waste systems need to be completely drained or pumped out and then the entire systems need to be flushed with antifreeze.

Winterizing the cabin and interior involves taking preventative measures to minimize moisture which leads to mold and mildew.  Don't forget to pump out the bilge and pour in some antifreeze to flush the lines and pump housing.  Also remove the batteries fully charged and depending on where you store your boat, you may want to remove any electronics that can be easily stolen.

Finally, properly cover your boat with a high quality boat cover or tarp that is fastened securely but loose enough to allow for proper air circulation.  Support the cover with a cover support pole to prevent water-pooling.  The last thing you will do is inspect the environment and the storage device you are using to store your boat.  Make sure everything is structurally sound and free from the possibility of damaging your vessel.

Hope this Pontoon Boat Accessories article is helpful.

The Cheapest State to Retire in Will Have Systematic Advantages

!±8± The Cheapest State to Retire in Will Have Systematic Advantages

The cheapest state to retire in will have a systematic advantage of some kind. Reducing a regular expense relieves a budget much more than the occasional instance of sacrifice. A faucet that drips at a constant rate will fill up the sink, quickly. Depending on the personal preferences and lifestyle of the individual, the amount saved in a given area will vary. The solution to finding the cheapest state to retire in is to determine exactly how much of the lifestyle and personal preferences can be sacrificed and start there.

If there is much travel involved in the daily routine, the cheapest state to retire in is one that is near the oil production areas of the Gulf of Mexico where fuel is cheaper. This is the heart of the nation's fuel producing areas, and the residents have access to some of the cheapest fuel on the market. It happens that the warm, sunny weather allows a regular savings in heating costs, as well.

Warm weather reduces the amount that must be expended to heat a home, although, some of tropical areas are so hot and humid that they are unbearable to some people. Likewise, the coldest parts of the north are unbearable to many people that seek warmer climates in which to retire. The savings in heating and cooling expenses will be considerable in an area that is most similar to the preferences of the individual.

For those that feel that they would expend too much in cooling costs in the warmer parts, the best area might be in cooler areas more to the north. Most gulf states extend far up into the more mountainous region, which still may not be cool enough to require much more heat. If cool weather is desired, maybe a state further north would be cheaper to maintain. The mountains and foothills found when traveling north from the gulf offer cooler climatic conditions, but the further from the gulf, the more fuel prices increase.

To determine the cheapest state to retire in is important on an individual basis and will differ for everyone, but it is no secret why so many people choose the south. The savings that are possible in heating expenses alone bring this area to the top of the list. For those that like it hot, areas in the south will be cheaper than other areas, and the fuel is cheaper for those that like to drive.

Rainy Season in Jamaica

!±8± Rainy Season in Jamaica

The rainy season in Jamaica is a time of year that some Jamaicans do not look forward to. Between the months of June and December the island of Jamaica receives a substantial amount of rainfall. The majority of the time, the rainfall is moderate but at other times it is a heavy downpour that can last for days. In extreme cases, the heavy rain is accompanied by strong winds which develops into a hurricane. Hurricanes can produce very heavy rainfall and winds of up to 100 miles an hour. Hurricanes in Jamaica often devastate parts of the island and cause substantial flooding. Many areas become impassable.

When Jamaica experiences a hurricane, the economy grinds to a halt, and the infrastructure of the island takes a beating. Roads are damaged, electric poles are destroyed and electrical wiring is blown away or ripped apart. Many local businesses are damaged either directly or indirectly by a hurricane. Local businesses are directly damaged by the physical force of the hurricane's wind, and water which destroys property. On the other hand, they are indirectly damaged by the loss of revenue caused by having to remain closed during a hurricane. The loss of life and damage to personal property is usually directly proportional to the magnitude of the hurricane.

After the onslaught of a hurricane, many goods and services have to imported into the island to compensate for the lost productivity, destroyed crops and damaged infrastructure. Having to import foreign goods is an added expense. The damage caused by a hurricane and the lost productivity often amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars. Furthermore, revenue from tourism (on which the local economy depends) is lost because flights are canceled, tourists cut their visit short, and other visitors have no alternative but to postpone or cancel their trip.

The rainy season in Jamaica is a time of year that some Jamaicans do not look forward to. Between the months of June and December the island of Jamaica receives a substantial amount of rainfall. With ever changing weather patterns and climate changes, hurricanes are becoming ever more prevalent in the Caribbean. Before booking a trip to Jamaica one should remember that Jamaica's geographic location predisposes it to hurricanes. Therefore, preparation and research should be done prior to planning a trip to Jamaica.

The Weather of Glasgow, Scotland

!±8± The Weather of Glasgow, Scotland

The weather in Glasgow in most cases varies differently from the weather you'll experience while traveling through other parts of Scotland. Glasgow has the advantage of being positioned in the mild, southwestern part of Scotland which puts the city right in the path of the Gulf Stream as it passes over the warmer water of the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding hills of the Clyde Valley also help shield Glasgow from the typically humid temperatures and conditions that normally are associated with Scotland throughout the course of the year. All of these factors combine to make the weather in Glasgow milder than other parts of the country.

Glasgow's daily forecast during the months from March to May are typically for cool and mild weather. This is the time of year when the plants and trees around the city begin to bloom so any visitors to the city interested in gardening might want to plan their trips during this period. The summer in Glasgow starts in May and runs into September. During these months the weather slides from wet and mild to warm and sunny depending on how warm the winds of the Gulf Stream are as they travel west across the city.

If you're looking to visit Glasgow when the weather is at its warmest than you might want to book your trip during the month of July. The coldest months are in December when the weather gets very wet as well. The record low for Glasgow was -4 Fahrenheit back in December of 1995. This isn't the best time of year to be visiting Glasgow or any place in Scotland for that matter.

When the weather is windy and rainy in Glasgow things can be a bit cold but thanks to the Gulf Stream it's never terrible for too long. This is also true during bouts of heavy snowfall as they typically melt away shortly after they hit the ground. Thanks to its weather, Glasgow is one of the mildest cities in all of Scotland and perfect for anyone looking for good conditions during a vacation.
